Mostra 2016: Danfoss highlights innovative compressor and condensing units
At the 2016 Mostra Expo in Torino, Danfoss highlights its solutions to address key industry challenges, including the increasing demand and standards for energy performance and part-load efficiency, as well as regulations for low-GWP refrigerants.
This year, Danfoss is intensifying its line of compressors qualified for low-GWP refrigerants and will release new products, including a new scroll compressor range for air conditioning.
Compressors for Air Conditioning:
New range of Danfoss Scrolls with IDVs improve part-load efficiency
New Danfoss scroll compressors with Intermediate Discharge Valves (IDVs) will be available in cooling capacities from 7.5 to 40 tons. They offer new features and options that deliver the most cost-effective solution for the next generation of rooftop units and chillers with R-410A.
IDVs allow the compressor to avoid over-compression losses and, thus, extra work by the motor during part-load operation—enabling Danfoss Scrolls DCJ and DSH to save energy and improve SEER from 3 to 10 percent. Plus, Danfoss Scrolls with IDVs are backward compatible with the existing Danfoss SH range, leading to minimal redesign and implementation costs.
Leveraging Danfoss’ experience with rooftop and chiller applications, Danfoss scroll compressors with IDVs include additional tandem and trio combinations, an extension of the operating map, improved liquid handling capability, and a patented, more robust oil management method in manifolding applications.

Danfoss Turbocor VTT Series of Compressors delivers at best full and part-load efficiencies
The Danfoss Turbocor VTT (Variable Twin Turbo) series of compressors takes all benefits of magnetic bearing technology up into larger capacity ranges where the current Turbocor TT series leaves off. VTT compressors introduces innovative and patented technology IntraFlow® that eliminates the cost and complexity of inlet guide vanes or variable geometry diffusers and at the same time simplifies the capacity control, extends the stable operating range, and improves the compressor efficiency. The VTT offers scalable solutions and enables chiller systems easily up to 1,200 tons and more to provide improved reliability with the largest stable operating range of any centrifugal compressor. The VTT is a high-efficiency solution for commercial air-conditioning and process cooling applications and recently won the prestigious 2015 AHR Expo Innovation Award in the Green Building category.
In complement to this recent release, the company plans to expand the TG product range operating with ultra-low-GWP HFO-1234ze from 60 to 145 tons (220 kW to 500 kW) of nominal cooling capacity in 2016. The ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP <1), zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) refrigerant HFO-1234ze exhibits improved energy efficiency compared to a comparable compressor model using HFC-134a – 3 percent higher for TG310 over TT300. When combined with the extraordinary environmental metrics for GWP and ODP, Danfoss Turbocor TG series offers customers a new benchmark in overall operational sustainability. This expansion also includes qualification for other low-GWP refrigerants, including HFO blends.
Danfoss Inverter Scrolls VZH for optimum energy efficiency
Designed to deliver precise temperature and humidity control while providing the best energy efficiency in rooftop, chiller, close control, process cooling, and ground source heat pump applications, the newest Danfoss inverter scroll compressor VZH models, released in June 2015, deliver cooling capacities between 4 to 7 tons and up to 13 tons in manifold configurations, and heating capacities between 3 to 25 kW. These new VZH models in smaller cooling capacities extend the existing range from 4 to 26 tons with a single compressor and up to 52 tons in manifold configuration.
Inverter scroll compressors VZH are the second generation of Danfoss scroll compressors offering variable speed technology for commercial air-conditioning applications, and enable OEMs to create optimum systems with advanced efficiency, stepless modulation, and accurate cooling for a wide range of applications, including data centers, IT cooling, telecom facilities, offices, and industrial and residential buildings.
Compressors & Condensing Units for Refrigeration
Danfoss extended its range of light commercial refrigeration fractional compressors in 2015. With the addition of the D, U, L, P, X and S platforms, Danfoss has increased its compressor range in both capacity and efficiency. This, together with one of the broadest—and ever-increasing— efficiency and capacity ranges in R-290 (Propane), gives OEMs and contractors alike the best solution to meet all of their needs.
This offer comes together with a range of innovative Inverter packaged condensing units and a qualification plan for refrigerants with lower GWP.
Optyma™ Plus INVERTER
Danfoss releases at the beginning of 2016 its line of inverter packaged condensing units. Based on the premium design of Optyma™ Plus and featuring Danfoss variable speed scroll compressor and drive, this range delivers the best 3,84 SEPR with R407F for applications in medium temperatures ranging from 3 to 9 kW. The energy performance is certified by Asercom.
With an extended stepless capacity modulation from 30 to 100Hz, this solution is appropriate for installations with several evaporators, typically including cold rooms, display cabinets or GDM. It is also extremely adapted to applications needing a precise temperature or humidity control, to preserve the quality of processes – proofers for example - or food, e.g. in food service, flower or butcher shops.
Qualifications for lower GWP in refrigeration expected end of 2016 through 2018
In food retail and commercial refrigeration applications, where R404A and R134a are today primary refrigerants and high GWP, R404A will be banned in new equipment as well as for replacement in Europe. Using different technologies in refrigeration, Danfoss’ compressor validation plan includes alternatives for:
- Danfoss Light Commercial Refrigeration: A lot of Danfoss compressors are already available for use with the A3 refrigerant R290 and A2L refrigerant R1234yf. However, to overcome the charge limit of 150g for A3 refrigerants, both the A1 blends R449A and R452A are undergoing qualification tests.
- Danfoss Maneurop reciprocatings: have been qualified for the mid-term solution of R-407A and R-407F, but will now also be expanded to include R-452A.
- Danfoss Scrolls: Danfoss Scrolls MLZ and LLZ will be qualified for both R448A and R449A. Additionally, in order to enable an extended range of solutions for R404A retrofit applications, Danfoss MLZ and LLZ series will run qualification process for R452A blend.
- Optyma™ condensing unit portfolio: will be made available for the same refrigerants as the compressors.
